2014 Architecture Competition

Presentation by Charles-Mathieu Brunelle, Director, Montréal Space for Life, on the architecture competition held in 2014.

Context

On February 10, 2014, the city of Montréal launched the Montréal Space for Life architecture competition. This international competition concerned three major projects: the Insectarium Metamorphosis, the Biodôme Migration and the Glass Pavilion at the Botanical Garden.

The Competition

  • December 2013: Space for Life invites Montrealers to take part in brainstorming and co-creation workshops to be held in January 2014.
  • February 2014: The City of Montréal officially launches the Space for Life international architecture competition
  • April 2014 – 1st selection stage: Fifty-nine qualifying submissions are received and the jury members select the top four submissions for each of the three projects.
  • July 2014 – 2nd selection stage: The finalists are invited to present their projects in public sessions to Montrealers and the jury.
  • November 2014: Space for Life announces the winners and starts the Biodôme Migration.

  • Quality of the integration of mechanics in the architectural and structural ensemble
  • Consistency of the submission with LEED Platinum certification and potential to achieve Living Building Challenge certification
