Antidiabetic plants in the boreal forest
The people ofCanada’s First Nations have a high rate of diabetes that increases each year. By combining traditional knowledge, science and plants of the boreal forest, we hope to reduce this rate. Interviews conducted on Cree territory highlighted more than 30 species with antidiabetic potential. Out of these species, 17 were analyzed for their phytochemical and antioxidant profile, their antidiabetic properties and their possible interactions with medication. The results show the extent to which Cree knowledge supports the lab analyses.
