Description of the activity

Make a name tag that you can wear when you visit the Butterflies Go Free greenhouse.

Equipment needed by the student

  • An outline of a butterfly or caterpillar. You can use one of ours or draw your own
  • Fairly thick paper or cardboard
  • Tracing paper, if necessary
  • A black marker
  • Scissors
  • Pencil crayons
  • A paper punch
  • String or ribbon

Equipment necessary for the teacher

Teacher's copy

Make enough copies of the activity sheets, one for each child.

Trace the drawing onto your paper or cardboard. You might want to use tracing paper to make this easier. With the black marker, write your name and your school’s name on your name tag. Decorate your insect with your favourite colours and then cut it out. Use the paper punch to make a hole in the centre of the butterfly (or on both sides of the caterpillar, as marked) and then tie the string or ribbon onto it. You can wear your colourful name tag when you visit Butterflies Go Free!

Refresher course

Note to group leaders: Please explain to your students the importance of respecting both the environment in the greenhouse and its residents. This means staying on the path and never touching the butterflies or moths. They are delicate creatures and easily damaged.
