Curator's pick

This insect lives on the mountaintops of South Africa. Unlike most beetles, it has no wings and its legs have adapted to dig in the soil. The beetle is very rare, and is threatened by climate change and the destruction of its habitat. It is on the list of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
