How to protect biodiversity at home?

Urban sprawl and the fragmentation of green spaces are contributing to the disappearance of biodiversity, to an increase in heat islands and to climate change. Vegetating a balcony, a terrace or a wall or creating a flower or kitchen garden are ways of getting closer to nature and taking concrete action to preserve biodiversity.

What are the advantages of participating in the My Space for Life Garden program?

The My Space for Life Garden program is free and open to all residents of Québec, to company gardens, green roofs and community gardens. When you participate you benefit from a number of advantages:

  • tip sheets developed by the Montréal Space for Life specialists
  • events specially designed for program participants
  • discounts on our partners’ products
  • a chance to win a free annual family membership with the Friends of the Garden
  • pride in being part of a movement for the protection of biodiversity

Montréal Space for Life aknowledge your action by giving you a certificate for the garden you created.

Choose a theme for your garden

Depending on your personal interests and the size of the area you have available, you can choose one – or all – of the following garden themes:

  • The Biodiversity Garden promotes the cultivation of native plants and the adoption of environmentally friendly growing methods. This will attract a wide range of useful fauna to your garden.
  • The Bird Garden offers a space that will attract birds – a garden where they can feed and shelter throughout the year.
  • The Monarch Oasis will transform your garden into a place for observing these flamboyant butterflies.
  • The Kitchen Garden invites you to grow a diversity of plants that feed both the gardener and wildlife. The charming, the useful and the delicious all together!

Before you start to create your garden, make sure you’re familiar with the bylaws of your municipality. We also recommend reading our fact sheet on organic gardening entitled  Basic principles of organic gardening.

Acknowledgements

As proof of its commitment and to help build the biodiversity protection movement, in 2013 Space for Life launched the My Space for Life Garden program as a means of encouraging citizens to “greenify” their environment. This project was made possible thanks to financial support from the Conférence régionale des élus de Montréal and the Secrétariat à la région métropolitaine.

For their invaluable collaboration we also thank the Space for Life Foundation, the Friends of the Montréal Botanical Garden, the Conseil Régional de l’Environnement-Montréal, the Association des retraités du Jardin botanique de Montréal (Club Iris), Horticulture Indigo and the Regroupement des Éco-quartiers.
