A Whole Month of Halloween Celebrations at Montréal Space for Life

Montréal, September 27, 2017 -

Why wait until October 31 for all the fun? At Montréal Space for Life, we’re celebrating fall and Halloween starting on October 6 this year. At the Botanical Garden, you can admire nature in all its abundant glory and check out the hundreds of decorated pumpkins on display, to the great delight of Esmeralda, our friendly witch and urban gardener. At the Insectarium, spiders are in the spotlight. Let us usher you into their fascinating world – no masks or makeup, promise! Finally, at the Biodôme, we’re putting on a very special Halloween event for the animals. The beavers, otters and fish will have to use all their senses and abilities to get to their favourite foods, hidden carefully away in pumpkins.

The Great Pumpkin Ball and Spiders Unmasked

October 6 to 31 – daily – 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Nature that feeds us and inspires creativity – that’s our theme this fall for all the fun family activities on offer at the Botanical Garden. Don’t miss the Pumpkin-decorating contest, open for entries until October 15; the Great Pumpkin Ball, with its display of more than 800 artistically transformed squashs of all kinds; the return of Esmeralda, the friendly witch, with her fabulous recipes and zany magic potions; the Little Monsters Courtyard, our kids’ outdoor play area, and the Squash Kiosk. Premiering this year is an all-new children’s storytelling session, POUAH, bébé sorcière (in French only), directed by Jean-Francois Guilbeault and based on the book by the same name by author Lucie Papineau and illustrator Steve Beshwaty, presented in co-operation with the Friends of the Montréal Botanical Garden.

Do you think spiders are cute? You’re right, of course! We're sure you'll be charmed by their big eyes and excited to learn more about their secrets and fascinating behaviour. Above all, don’t miss the reading of the new original story, Le Roi des bestioles, produced in co-operation with the Association des écrivains québécois pour la jeunesse, written by Émilie Rivard, Jean Bernèche, Jocelyn Jalette and Louise Tondreau-Levert, and illustrated by Mika and Hélène Lavertu. We bet young audiences will beg for more when they learn how adorable and clever spiders can be!

October 28 and 29 – HALLOWEEN FOR THE ANIMALS at the Biodôme

Come see how mammals, fish and even birds use their ingenuity to open pumpkins full of each one’s favourite foods! It’s also an enrichment activity that keeps the inhabitants of the different ecosystems alert, just as they are in the wild.

Montréal Space for Life is made up of four attractions on the same site: the Biodôme, Botanical Garden, Insectarium and Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium. These four prestigious municipal institutions form Canada's largest natural science museum complex. Together, they are launching a daring, creative urban movement, urging everyone to rethink the connection between humankind and nature and cultivate a new way of living.
