By taking part in the Mission Monarch program, you help construct the breeding map of this endangered species. And that will help scientists better protect this emblematic butterfly.

Print the form to fill out.

Download the notes sheet on mission-monarch.org/en. You’ll be able to use it to collect important information for scientists. A magnifying glass may also be useful.

Find some milkweed.

This plant is indispensable for the monarch. It can be found in parks, gardens, fields, lanes – It grows pretty much everywhere.

  • The leaves are broad and hairy-looking.
  • The blooms give off a strong, pleasant scent.
  • The fruit contain seeds adorned with silky plumes.

Look for eggs, caterpillars and chrysalides.

Examine the milkweed closely. How many eggs, caterpillars and chrysalides are hiding under the leaves, in the blooms and on the fruit? Make a note of your results, and take photos.

The egg - Under a leaf, which is oval or conical in shape, and ridged. - 1 mm

The caterpillar - Striped, with black filaments at the tips. - 2 to 45 mm

The chrysalis - The golden dots reflect the light - 30 mm

The adult - 90 to 100 mm
