The American mountain-ash blooms in spring, typically between May and June. Its small white flowers grow in dense, flattened clusters known as inflorescences.
The tree’s fruit, called sorb, is the origin of its scientific name, sorbus, from a Latin root meaning “red, reddish-brown.” These small, round berries contain a single seed and have little flesh. By August, the fruits ripen, turning a bright red and remaining on the tree throughout winter.
