Black spruce

In the past, this tree was used to make spruce beer, considered a good source of vitamins and minerals at the time. Beer that was ready to drink in less than a week was made by boiling fresh shoots with a bit of molasses, maple syrup or honey, yeast and water. Hardened balls of resin make excellent chewing gum. This tree is mainly used in the pulp and paper industry, as well as for making wood siding and containers.
