Blue cohosh

The leaves and seeds of blue cohosh are toxic, causing stomach pain. The seeds can be roasted, however, and used as a coffee substitute. Roasting probably destroys their toxicity.
The dried rhizome, or underground stem, induces uterine contractions and eases childbirth and menstruation. It is also used as a remedy for rheumatism and certain types of spasms, including hiccups, colic and cramps.
