Dog's tooth violet, trout lily

This species flowers very early in spring. The bulb must be at least four years old for the plant to flower. Before a plant flowers, it produces three stolons at its base that form small bulbs. Each of these goes on to produce other plants. Dog's tooth violet also reproduces by seed, released in June. These seeds do not germinate until the next year, producing a seedling that takes root in the soil. The first leaf does not emerge until the following year.
