Dutchman's breeches

This species flowers in spring, from April to May. This plant's flowers are accessible only to bees and butterflies with a long enough proboscis to reach the nectar in the spurs. One often comes across spurs that have been pierced, probably by insects. Honeybees, which visit the flowers mostly for pollen, manage to reach it by pushing aside the two inside petals with their heads and brushing the pollen with their front legs.
