Maxima fig tree

Many different animals eat its fruit. When the tree grows on a riverbank, the fruit falls into the water and is eaten by fish.

The highly ramified crown of this fig provides a good nesting site for many species of birds.

The tree also offers a home for certain beneficial insects. Ants, for instance, protect it from predators. The sterile female flowers serve as an incubator for wasp larvae, which later pollinate the tree.
