Description

The stem of this plant is covered in long hairs and can grow 50 cm to 2 m tall. The leaves are wide, toothed and covered in hairs. Their veins are arranged like the barbs on a feather. The small yellow flowers are grouped in flowerheads 3 to 4 mm long, which are themselves grouped in pyramidal clusters, some with leaves.

Reproduction

This perennial species flowers in summer and autumn. It reproduces by seed.

Habitat, distribution

It grows in dry sites, woods and clearings. It is found from Ontario to Nova Scotia and, in the United States, from New England to Florida and as far west as Texas.

Ecology

Around Montréal, rough-stemmed goldenrod stays in bloom longer than all other species in the Solidago genus, into November. This plant is most abundant in the northern part of its distribution area. The specimens that grow farther north are quite different from those in the south, in that their leaves extend past the end of their flower clusters.

Uses and effects

At one time, doctors thought that rough-stemmed goldenrod had healing properties. Today, many people mistakenly believe that it causes hay fever, an allergy that is actually caused by ragweed, whose pollen appears at the same time as goldenrod.
