Some sedges are found on dry sites, salty sites and locations with average moisture, such as cut-over areas. However, most sedges grow, sometimes in very large numbers, on moist sites and in areas with shallow water. Sedges are also present in all natural habitats in Québec: open, wooded, dry, moist, rocky, sandy, poor, rich or boggy sites. This very large genus includes more than 1,000 abundant species distributed throughout the temperate regions of both hemispheres. There are many sedges in eastern North America, with some 200 species in Québec alone.
