Bloodflower (Asclepias curassavica) is a tropical milkweed species that is easy to grow in containers or as a houseplant. It makes a good substitute for native species (A. syriaca and A. incarnata) as a host and nectar plant for attracting monarchs to your balcony. Just remember to bring it indoors for the winter.
Bloodflower is native to the American tropics. It is a perennial, often used as an annual at our latitudes, and grows about 70 to 100 cm tall. Its flowers are reddish-orange. It is easy to grow in containers and prefers a warm, sunny spot, but will tolerate partial shade when grown outdoors.
