- Planétarium Rio Tinto Alcan
LEED® NC 1.0 – Platinum certification
The Planétarium Rio Tinto Alcan has been the 4th building in Quebec to receive this certification and the 2nd one in Montréal, after the Saint-Laurent Borough’s du Boisé library. In the LEED® system, the Platinum level is the highest distinction for green buildings. The aim is to improve the well-being of building occupants and buildings’ environmental performance and operational efficiency.
Reduced energy and water consumption
With its distinctive architecture and sustainable design, the Planétarium Rio Tinto Alcan manages resources responsibly.
- In terms of energy, the Planetarium benefits from the Biodôme’s highly efficient energy-recovery and transfer systems, which meet its air conditioning and heating needs, while the geothermal system reduces energy consumption considerably. The hybrid natural ventilation system also helps to reduce these needs, in addition to enhancing indoor air quality. The building’s external envelope also contributes to its energy efficiency, along with its green roof that reduces the heat island effect.
- The entire Planetarium is bathed in natural daylight, including the underground level, thanks to windows onto the parking lot. The lighting fixtures are high-efficiency, as well.
- Rainwater is collected in two holding tanks, and is used for the toilets and irrigation.
Even the parking lot is now “greener,” with electrical recharging outlets and a larger bicycle parking area.
