Montréal, first monarch-friendly city in Quebec
With the signing of the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge by Mayor Denis Coderre, Montréal has become a monarch-friendly city and a leader. It will be helping to restore habitat for these butterflies, known for their exceptional migration and whose survival is at risk in eastern North America.
By implementing protective measures and encouraging its citizens to join in, Montréal is showing its environmental concern and its support for actions taken by some boroughs, as well as by Montréal Space for Life.
The Insectarium has already been working for over two decades to educate people about monarchs and contribute to their survival by developing activities, events and educational and research programs. Currently, Mission Monarch invites members of the public to conduct surveys of monarchs and milkweed, their host plant. Everyone can create their own Monarch Oasis, in their yard or on their balcony, where the butterflies can feed, reproduce and rest.
To do even more to help protect monarchs, Montréal Space for Life is also working with the David Suzuki Foundation, which invites the public to sign its manifesto and plant milkweed. The introduction and implementation of the monarch-friendly city program in Montréal is being carried out in partnership with the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC).
