Montréal, October 2, 2015 -

As part of its annual program of activities inspired by light, Montréal Space for Life has organized a colourful lineup for you this fall! There are all sorts of surprises in store at the 30thedition of the Great Pumpkin Ball at the Montréal Botanical Garden, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily from October 2 to November 1. Some 800 decorated pumpkins will be brightening up the Main Exhibition Greenhouse, and our unforgettable Esmeralda will be giving tours of her all-new home. Come admire her huge hat house and enjoy all kinds of special activities: an exhibition, a contest, a show, games, discoveries and more! Things are going to be hopping this fall at the Botanical Garden, and at the Insectarium and the Biodôme, too.

It’s a pumpkin party at the Botanical Garden

Join the fun at the Botanical Garden! Pumpkins are invading the Main Exhibition Greenhouse, while glowing lanterns are illuminating the Chinese Garden and nature is decked out in amazing colours in the Japanese Garden for Gardens of Light. The many fall activities will delight visitors of all ages from early in the morning til after dark.

  • The Great Pumpkin Ball
Hundreds of decorated pumpkins have gathered in the Main Exhibition Greenhouse. Along with her cat Abracadabra and her broom Gontran, Esmeralda invites you to come admire them. Our friendly witch has turned into an urban gardener, and will be proud to show you her vegetable patch. By mistake, though, she cast a “growth spell” on her hat, and now it’s a house! Daily, from 9:30 a.m.
  • Pumpkin-decorating contest
Let your imagination go wild, as you turn a pumpkin into an amazing piece of art! Large or small, round, long and skinny or flat – all members of the Cucurbitaceae family are welcome. You can bring your decorated pumpkin to the Botanical Garden’s Reception Centre any day from October 2 to 8, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., and until 7 p.m. from October 9 to 12. The winners will be announced at the award ceremony at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 17.
  • Un cadeau pour Pépo, « l’Histoire de l’Halloween »
Over the past two decades, more than 400,000 youngsters have loved seeing these plays featuring Pépo and his adventures. This year, Pépo will be joined by a colourful cast of characters in a 30-minute show, to tell kids ages 4 to 8 how Halloween became the holiday we know today. One to four shows a day, in French only. Free passes at the Reception Centre counter.
  • Squash Kiosk
Squash are in the spotlight at the Botanical Garden, where we grow some fifty varieties of them. Learn all about the Cucurbitaceae family by playing BingoRalda, the quiz our nature interpreters have put together especially for all those sorcerers and sorcerers’ apprentices out there. Daily, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Little Monsters Courtyard
Loads of fun and challenges in store for the under-10 set in this outdoor play area with 11 modules – don’t miss the Tricky River, the Kangaroo Pouch race, Insect Soup and the quiz on urban and rural agriculture. Daily, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Tricky Spiders at the Insectarium

Spiders are not only great charmers, but also fearsome hunters, with amazing adaptability. Halloween is the perfect time to learn all about their exploits.
Daily, at 1 and 2 p.m.

Pumpkin Treats at the Biodôme

Mammals, fish and birds… everyone at the Biodôme gets a treat! In this original enrichment activity that keeps the inhabitants of the different ecosystems alert, they have to use their ingenuity to tease their favourite foods out of their surpise pumpkin-shaped packages!
October 31 and November 1, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
