Two Audience Favourites Return!
Montréal, April 26, 2018 -

What better way to celebrate the planetarium’s 5th anniversary than by bringing back the two shows that have been audience favourites since it opened in 2013? Starting May 1, Espace pour la vie will be presenting a crowd-pleasing double feature: Continuum and Aurōrae. Continuum

This film melding science, art and emotions is a perfect example of the original approach taken by Espace pour la vie. From the infinitely small to the infinitely large, audiences will be inspired by this cosmic poem on the connection between humankind and the Universe. Fascinating, gripping images and inventive technology all add up to an immersive experience that whisks viewers off on a voyage through the beauties of space.

This breathtaking show, first screened at the opening of the Planétarium Rio Tinto Alcan in 2013, was designed by internationally acclaimed Montréal artists Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon, set to an entrancing symphonic score by Philip Glass. It’s a magnificent fable that celebrates the splendours of the Universe.

Photos taken from the Hubble space telescope were synthesized, and images of nebulae recreated and broken down into several layers, to immerse viewers in a fascinating visual depiction of the forces of space.

Producer: Neurone 3 and Planétarium Rio Tinto Alcan
Length: 23 minutes

In March 2015, director Sébastien Gauthier and his co-scriptwriter Loïc Quesnel, both from the Planétarium Rio Tinto Alcan, headed all the way up to Yellowknife, in the Northwest Territories. There they took no fewer than 179,000 images of the northern lights, in 360°. For many frigid nights, under clear skies far from any light pollution, the pair scanned the starry skies in search of these famous shimmering curtains of light. They bring you the northern lights in a way that makes you feel like you’re right there, in a captivating and exceptional immersive experience!

The planetarium team used new postproduction techniques to brighten up and sharpen the original images and make them even more realistic. From Montréal to Yellowknife, from outer space to the Earth’s core, you’ll see the northern lights like never before. Guided by an enthusiastic expert and accompanied by an electrifying score by DJ Champion, Aurōrae is a thrilling show.

Producer: Planétarium Rio Tinto Alcan

Script: Sébastien Gauthier and Loïc Quesnel

Aurōrae is preceded by a 10-minute presentation on the night sky.

Nature dwells within us
In 2018, Espace pour la vie is looking at the many ways of dwelling on our planet. It’s a source of inspiration for some, and a call to reflection and dialogue for others, leading to citizen-based initiatives. This year at Espace pour la vie, nature dwells within us more than ever!

Montréal Space for Life is made up of four attractions on the same site: the Jardin botanique, Biodôme, Insectarium and Planétarium Rio Tinto Alcan. These four prestigious municipal institutions form Canada's largest natural science museum complex. Together, they are launching a daring, creative urban movement, urging everyone to rethink the connection between humankind and nature and cultivate a new way of living.
