Hermit crab

These crustaceans hide from their predators in spiral-shaped gastropod shells. They change their shells and moult as they grow.

The female is able to reproduce only after she has moulted, before the exoskeleton has hardened.

Hermit crabs play an important role by recycling organic matter contained in the dead plants and animals they eat.
