Oysterleaf, sea lungwort

It colonizes the upper parts of beaches, between the sea and patches of sea lime grass. It is one of our most remarkable seaside plants. Its bluish colour comes from its waxy coating, or \bloom\. This coating is the plant's way of adapting to the conditions in its environment. Because water is often hard to come by in the ground on the type of beach on which it grows, the plant stores it in its fleshy leaves. The bloom reduces evaporation caused by the sun and wind.
