Architecture for life

From concept to reality

The new Planétarium Rio Tinto Alcan is a tremendous achievement. In keeping with Montréal's orientations as a Cultural Metropolis, a Knowledge City and a UNESCO City of Design, it boasts highly creative architecture, incorporating advanced energy-efficiency concepts and an impressive environmental component.

Since the announcement of the project's implementation in December 2007, it was clear that the new building would need to stand out on several levels. As was pointed out by Charles-Mathieu Brunelle: “[...] we want a design that reflects our uniqueness and our daring and embody our vision – the human being at the heart of the Universe.” Thanks to the cooperation of the City of Montréal and its partners in the project, the implementation and realization of the Planétarium Rio Tinto Alcan enlisted the most established as well as the most innovative talents in the fields of architecture and engineering, along with leading experts in the field of sustainable development.

The dream has now become a reality. The planetarium embodies, even surpasses all initial ambitions. It contributes to the Space for Life vision of inventing a new way of life together, a challenge that inspires both Montréalers and communities around the world alike.
