This bushy, spreading shrub grows about 60 to 150 cm tall. Easy to spot in summer thanks to its small yellow, tubular flowers, it is found in deciduous and mixed forests.
The leaves grow in opposite pairs along the twigs, with short petioles. Oval in shape, they have pointed tips and toothed margins. Medium green through the summer, they turn yellow, orange, or deep red in fall, depending on sun exposure.
Bush honeysuckle flowers are 5 to 12 mm long. They grow on a terminal stalk or in the upper leaf axils at the plant’s nodes.
The fruit is a capsule, 1 to 2 cm long, that turns brownish and splits open when mature to release the seeds. The seeds are small, oblong, slightly flattened, and light.
