Aronia melanocarpa
  • Aronia melanocarpa
  • Vaccinium angustifolium
  • Fragaria virginiana

Attracting birds to your garden has benefits for both you and the birds. Take advantage of their visit to observe them and offer them a source of food. In addition, some birds can become important allies by eating unwanted insects.

Advice on how to invite birds tot the vegetable garden

  • In your landscaping, near your vegetable garden, integrate some plants that produce fruits favored by birds. But of course you have to share! Here are a few:
Common name Latin name
Serviceberry (Amelanchier spp.)
Canada serviceberry (Amelanchier canadensis)*
Black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa)*
Blueberry (Vaccinium spp.)
Early lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium)*
Strawberry (Fragaria spp.)
Wild strawberry (Fragaria virginiana)*
Raspberry and Blackberry (Rubus spp.)
Currant and Black currant (Ribes spp.)
Grapevine (Vitis vinifera)
Wild raisin (Viburnum nudum var. cassinoides)*

* Native species

  • Birds will also be attracted by seeds from these: coreopsis, cosmos, coneflowers, sunflower, heliopsis, black-eyed Susan, grasses, etc. Therefore, blooms must not be cut off after the plants flower.
  • To attract hummingbirds, you can add columbine, beebalm, sage and weigela.

The plants suggested here are just a few of the many possibilities. It’s just up to you to conduct your own tests – and to observe the results.
