What does winter protection mean for your garden? Protection seeks to prevent and minimize damage to plants caused by wind, cold, freezing rain and even snow when weighed down by rain or by snow piled up during removal operations.

Winter protection is therefore a routine activity carried out year after year; however, as we never know what winter will bring, the same questions are raised each year.

Here we will provide an overview of the main activities to plan for when putting your garden to bed in the fall. You will see that there is no single way of doing it, but that every situation leaves the door open to improvisation and innovation and always calls on the gardener’s good judgement.
