It usually grows in mixed and deciduous forests, often in humid and shaded environments. Young hemlocks are sensitive to sunlight and generally grow beneath the canopy of taller trees.
The species thrives in acidic, well-drained soils and often appears late in forest succession, alongside white pine and sugar maple.
Its range covers a large portion of eastern North America. It is found in the northeastern United States (Maine, Vermont, New York), in the Midwest (Ohio, Michigan), and occasionally as far south as Kentucky and Tennessee.
In Canada, eastern hemlock is abundant in Ontario—especially in the south and centre—and can also be found in the Maritimes. In Quebec, it grows in the Laurentides, the Cantons-de-l'Est, and the Mauricie regions.
