Most often gathered in natural environments, insect collections support research, education, and conservation. However, as scientific knowledge has advanced and ethical concerns have evolved, our approaches to collecting and preserving specimens have also had to change.
That is why in showcasing its collections and carrying out its educational mission, the Insectarium draws on current entomological knowledge and considers:
- the importance of ethics and insect well-being;
- the effects of collecting on insect populations, especially those with a particular conservation status (threatened, vulnerable, etc.);
- its commitment to promoting a love of insects and responsible educational approaches.
Ethical principles for responsible insect collecting
There are many types of collections: commercial, educational, museum-based, or scientific collections, as well as private hobby collections. Whatever the purpose, the Insectarium recommends the following foundations for ethical collecting:
- Replace: whenever possible, favour non-lethal alternatives to collecting insects.
- Reduce: limit the frequency of collecting and the number of specimens taken.
- Refine: adopt practices that minimize animal suffering or distress.
Criteria for ethical collecting
- Clearly define the goals of the collection and the reasons for collecting.
- Avoid collecting species with a special conservation status.
- Reduce the environmental impact of collecting.
- Follow local regulations (permits, authorizations, etc.).
- Identify specimens according to entomological standards (scientific name, date, and collection location), and ensure data reliability.
- Preserve specimens carefully to avoid waste.
- Share data with the community and communicate consistent educational messages.
Recommendations for private collections
The Insectarium recognizes the educational and scientific value of creating personal collections, and their potential to spark an interest in insects. However, it encourages amateur entomologists to reflect on their actions throughout the collecting process and to follow the ethical principles outlined above.
With this in mind, the Insectarium promotes other forms of entomology-related hobbies. The museum does not offer educational activities focused on creating personal collections.
