Prune hydrangeas according to the species and at the right time
- Species that bloom principally on new wood (H. arborescens) can be cut close to the ground (10-15 cm) yearly, in either the fall or early spring. However, even without any pruning, these shrubs will bloom annually.
- Species that bloom on both old and new wood (H. macrophylla, H. paniculata, H. serrata, H. petiolaris, H. quercifolia) should be pruned more lightly. In the spring, a clean-up pruning is usually sufficient. Simply remove any frail, broken or dried stems. If necessary, you can cut the stems back by one-third or one-half.
