This medium-sized tree can grow up to 25 metres tall. The trunk is covered with scaly bark. The twigs are shiny red to greyish brown. The buds are small and red.
Its smooth, waxy, opposite leaves are green above and whitish beneath. Turning red in spring and fall, they have 3 to 5 shallow lobes, with angular notches and irregularly toothed edges.
The red flowers are grouped in distinct clusters. The fruit is a pair of winged keys with a shallow 60° angle between them. Each key is short, measuring 1.5 to 2.5 cm.
