The giant water bug lives in fresh water, in ponds and basins rich in aquatic plants, near the shores of lakes and in ditches. It is often hidden in debris and vegetation.

The legs of the giant water bug, which end in a sharp claws, are well suited to capture prey. The claws withdraw completely when the insect must protect itself from predators, the shin coming to rest in a groove of its powerful femur.
