To make sure that your tree or shrub is happy and flourishes in its new site, it is important to give
it the appropriate watering, especially for the first three years.
At all times, adjust the frequency of watering to take account of the plant’s needs and other
conditions, including the type of soil, drainage, temperature, moisture, wind, rain and season.
After planting
During the first week after planting, water
it daily. Water thoroughly and deeply, but be careful not to overwater it. If necessary, use trickle
irrigation to avoid run-off. Building up a shallow rim of soil to form a saucer to trap water around the
planting hole makes watering easier.
For bare root trees and shrubs,
provide regular and abundant watering at planting and during the first full growing
season.
Dry periods and fall
During dry periods, water the soil thoroughly, at least once a week.
In fall, water thoroughly. Pay special attention to evergreens and plants that retain their leaves,
which need to store up water for the winter. Water them regularly and abundantly before the first frost.
