Jardin pour la biodiversité

Témoignage

We purchased our house in 2012 and the backyard was grass with a few hostas, a lilac, and a cedar as well as an old broken down tin shed. I began to rip up the grass and began the journey to a grass free garden filled with mostly perennials, vegetables, shrubs, vines and trees. I let the trees grow along the back fence to provide shade for the laneway. I transplanted a wild grape vine to grow along my fence and balcony to provide shelter and food for the wildlife. I installed a water bath for the birds and bugs and two bowls for the squirrels, raccoons, groundhogs, skunks, dogs and cats. Every year I try to add another perennial trying to get as many native species as possible. I've learned more and more about invasive species and just how little maintenance and water a perennial garden needs. My friends and neighbours call it a little oasis in the city. During the pandemic it has been a true life saver providing hours of joy and relaxation (and lots of work) for me, my husband and my four year old daughter. I still have a lot to learn about gardening but am thoroughly enjoying the ride and I know that wherever I go I will always try to leave any area a little bit more diverse and nature friendly than I found it. My own garden success spurred me on to propose a green laneway project for our laneway and in the coming weeks the city will help us begin the transformation of the laneway. I hope to work with my neighbours to create a city oasis to share with the whole neighbourhood laneway so that others can enjoy the space as much as I enjoy my little retreat.
